Seiko 5 Sports Speed-Timer Chronograph 6139-7020 (JDM)

Brand: Seiko

Model: 5 Sports Speed-Timer Automatic Chronograph ref. 6139-7020 (JDM Model) circa December of 1971

Case: Solid stainless steel case with screw-down back is approximately 41mm excluding the original unsigned crown and pushers

Bracelet: Rare vintage 19mm stainless steel bracelet with unsigned fold-over clasp and removable links; will fit wrist sizes up to approximately 7" (optional clasp extension can be installed to accommodate larger wrist sizes)

Movement: Seiko cal. 6139B self-winding automatic chronograph (21 jewels) with quick-set day (two languages) and quick-set date; 21,600 BPH; Suwa Seikosha Japan

Features: Stunning original luminous silver sunburst dial with red accents and contrasting minute totalizer at 6 o'clock; original white and black luminous hands; original orange chronograph register hands; blacked out day-date display at 3 o'clock with red Sunday text (can choose between Japanese "Kanji" or English days of the week); black internal rotating countdown bezel; unpolished 41mm stainless steel case with mineral glass crystal and really cool vintage bracelet; in-house Seiko 6139 column-wheel chronograph movement (serviced)

Condition: Very nice original condition overall with minor honest wear consistent with age and use; solid stainless steel case is thick and sharp and appears to be unpolished with the original finishes throughout; crisp screw-down caseback remains clearly legible; beautiful original dark silver sunburst dial with crisp printing, vibrant colors, and all luminous material in tact; original hands with all luminous material in tact and very minor white paint loss on the tip of the minute hand; original orange chronograph sweeping-seconds hand is lightly faded; new tempered mineral glass crystal installed at time of service (original mineral glass crystal will also be included with the watch); excellent 19mm vintage bracelet

Other: This fantastic vintage JDM Seiko Speed-Timer is the definition of value - How did Seiko pack so many features into one watch while retaining such a balanced and appealing design aesthetic? We love the contrasted minute sub-register, day-date display, and internal rotating countdown bezel against the crisp silver sunburst dial with a pop of red color. Seiko opted for orange chronograph hands on this model for increased legibility and it all just works so well. How cool is the Japanese "Kanji" day display? Especially on Sunday when it turns to red... This particular Speed-Timer comes in superb original condition on a great matching vintage bracelet and is ready to pair with your Japanese sports car (i.e. a Honda S2000 in Silverstone Metallic). For peace of mind, the Seiko 6139B movement has just been completely overhauled by our watchmaker with a new tempered mineral glass crystal installed at the time of service. Speaking of the 6139 movement, it was quite possibly the very first automatic chronograph movement to come to market commercially (May of 1969). The Zenith El Primero and Heuer cal. 11 movements also debuted that year. You can read more about this controversial topic from our friends at HODINKEE and OnTheDash. Regardless of which movement actually came first, the Seiko 6139 is a steal in the marketplace today compared to comparable watches from Heuer and Zenith.
