Wittnauer 14W Two-Register Chronograph ref. 3256 (Applied Logo)

SOLD

Brand: Wittnauer

Model: 14W Two-Register Chronograph ref. 3256 (Venus 188 with applied logo); Swiss Made circa early 1960s

Case: Solid stainless steel case with screw-down back is approximately 35mm excluding the original signed "W" winding crown

Strap: 18mm handmade textured calfskin strap with polished stainless steel tang buckle

Movement: Wittnauer cal. 14W (base Venus cal. 188) manual-winding chronograph movement (17 jewels); 18,000 BPH; Swiss Made

Features: Stunning original dial with applied logo, "torch" indices, and "SWISS" signature at 6 o'clock; original luminous hands; original blued-steel register hands; 30-minute chronograph recording capability; blue tachymeter scale for timing the average speed of a moving object (i.e. racing applications); red telemeter scale for timing the distance that an object travels over time (i.e. military artillery timing); unpolished stainless steel case with screw-down back and fantastic proportions; domed acrylic crystal (appears to be original)

Condition: Fantastic original condition overall with minor honest wear consistent with age and use; solid stainless steel case appears to be completely unpolished with razor-sharp bevels and the original finishes throughout; sharp screw-down caseback exhibits minor wear and appears to have been worn on a nylon pass-through strap for most of its life; gorgeous original dial with crisp printing, nice colors, and all lume plots present (lume plots have aged to a very attractive yellow hue); original hands with matching lume; clean original domed acrylic crystal

Other: If you've been looking for a vintage Wittnauer 3256 or similar chronograph, this is a superb example to own! We much prefer the clean Wittnauer-only dial (pre-Genève) as seen here with applied "W" logo, beautiful yellow lume plots, and matching original hands. Collectors also tend to favor the Venus 188 movement with standard pusher operations over the more common Landeron 248 movement (Wittnauer cal. 14Y). This watch can be worn with just about anything and the clean overall design is reminiscent of our favorite Gallet MultiChron models from this era. At 35mm in diameter and 44mm lug-to-lug, it sits comfortably on the wrist and slides nicely under a cuff. It would be difficult to find a better vintage stainless steel sport chronograph in this condition with pump pushers and a screw-down caseback for under $1,500.
